KLab9 Call for Contributions

KLab9 Call for Contributions
From KnowledgeLab
KLab9:Art - Technology, Authorship and Ways of Living
A weekend gathering for collaborative and creative reflection. 5th - 7th October, 2007 tbc.
Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University, North West England.

INTRODUCTION

The Knowledge Lab is an attempt to provide a collective space for anti-capitalist reflection. It is located at the margin of the university, an institution essentially geared towards the production of knowledge as a resource for corporate interest and as justification for particular constellations of power relations.
This knowledge lab will address art and ways of critically thinking about our world. Within this broad region of enquiry, the lab will encompass notions of life and art as a political commitment, the influence art can exert in politics and how political ideas in turn influence art. It will also address new ways of making art and how this relates to technologies and social changes, and the use of art as an anti-capitalist means to change and fight the system.

We hope that the knowledge lab will not merely address, but also show that art can initiate critical thinking in the various guises outlined above. Our expectations, in terms of the event, and its outcome, are that this be a sharing of creative ideas and ideas about creativity. We hope that it will draw together people with a common interest in art and alternative ways of living, but working in different fields. From this collective thinking we hope that people will be incited to realize, or make manifest, some of these ways of living and thinking creatively when they leave: We will learn from each other.

STREAMS

Like previous knowledge labs the day will be divided into four streams, each will take place in a separate room.

STREAM 1: TECHNOLOGY Free software, art spaces and interfaces, hardware, DIY and recycling/reusing.

STREAM 2: WAYS OF LIVING This stream concerns process, moment and performance. It is the political stream where we will consider primarily imaginative resistance and artivism, but also touch on debates surrounding gender issues, community and cultural production, and personal/political. We hope to see papers touching on initiatives in direct democracy; the art of changing that system, and the paradigms of inspiration. We would like to discuss how artivism will change society, possibles networks of artivists, ways of action.

STREAM 3: AUTHORSHIP Copy rights, ownership, patenting, and appropriation. (Creative commons, Copyleft,...)

STREAM 4: THE ART MARKET (new ways of) curating, spaces (physical and virtual) to show art, ways of making money: Marketing, the means of production, market forces and anti-market forces, the art market, and art and ethics.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Each day will be split into two parts. On Saturday and Sunday morning papers will be presented in each of the four streams, each lasting 20-30 minutes. Papers will be followed by a brief question period of 10-15 minutes. The afternoon will be divided into discussion periods in each of the four streams. During the weekend there will also be a separate space for workshops and performances.
There are therefore a variety of ways to contribute to the weekend. See below for details:

ACADEMIC PAPERS

The list of streams is not prescriptive, it simply outlines some of the issues we envisage arising given the general themes.

Please also send papers on other themes, these will be gratefully considered.

Submit an abstract of no more than 500 words. In addition please enclose a brief biography. Try to make this, along with your paper, as accessible as possible.

FACILITATED DISCUSSIONS (INVOLVEMENT AND SKILLS SHARING)

If you have an idea for one of the afternoon discussion topics that links in with one of the four streams then send in a your idea and think about one of the two types of involvement below:

If you'd like to take a more pro-active role during the conference, you might want to ADOPT a session - that is, prepare it in advance (suggest questions, main issues, reading material etc and propose the length of the session), arrive prepared for discussion themselves, attend it, and participate passionately in the debates.

We also need people to FACILITATE sessions - ideally a session should NOT be adopted and facilitated by the same person(s). Consider that facilitators are usually best if experienced in their task. Any which way, please get in touch.

== WORKSHOPS, ARTWORKS, AND PERFORMANCES ==

These will broadly tie in with one of the four streams above. Send a proposal [Max: A single side of A4], elaborate on: What your contribution will be e.g. a workshop, a performance, an artwork. How long you envisage it taking. Do you need any equipment or materials? Do you want to limit the number of participants? If so, how many? What do you hope will be born out of this? How do you propose to arrive at this end?

SATURDAY EVENING

DJ and VJ session: Call for DJs and VJs to send in samples so they might come and contribute to an evening of art in many guises. As well as other music, visual, perfomance, etc artist and Artivist.
Nb. Groups are welcome to contribute workshops, materials for display and/or distribution.

INFORMATION

Anybody is welcome to attend the weekend, get involved in the discussions, and take part in the workshops. HOWEVER, YOU NEED TO REGISTER TO ATTEND AS THE EVENT IS LIMITED TO 100 PEOPLE, SO PLEASE GET IN TOUCH: klab9art@googlemail.com
Invest in your own work - create fine art quality digital prints in any amount at any size, any time

Hello fellow creatives,

I have an Epson 9800 pro digital inkjet printer available at very low rates, often 1/2 to 1/4 as much as service bureaus charge, and am interested in working with photographers, artists, designers and others to print images of their work.

Many are familiar with the fine photo and fine art papers available, but many are not yet very familiar with printing on canvas. Your artwork can look superb on canvas as well, and the results are archival.

You can increase and extend the exposure of your work with accurate and long-lasting prints on many media including aluminum, vinyl and silk. It's possible to make more from selling prints than in selling originals, and you can do both.

If you are interested in printing at a fraction of the retail costs out there, please contact me. For example if your files are ready to go there is no setup fee, and printing on papers is $6.50/square foot and $8.50 for canvas. I am located in Oakland, CA and would enjoy talking with you more about it and helping you to get to where you print what you want, as few or as many as you want, when you want.

Thanks a lot, I look forward to working with you!

3. Buy or Rent a place to live for extended periods of time (6 months +)
Rare Collectible 1974 Andrew Turner acrylic

http://www.mwtshekemet.org/Andrew_Turner_original.html

Late, renowned African American artist Andrew Turner created this acrylic on canvas in 1974. It is an early work from the artist, making it an instant collectible. Turner's two favorite subjects were children and jazz scenes. This sepia-toned work is of an adorable little African American girl, sitting in slight repose. The canvas, on a wooden frame, is 16" X 12". The artist's original Chester, PA studio card is included, along with the dried masking tape the artist used to affix the card to the back of the piece. This has been in my collection since the early 90's, when Turner first rose to prominence. The frame faint outline is from Turner's signature ill-fitting frame against his work. This does not take away from the value of this collectible. Andrew Turner's life was tragic and short-lived, but his legacy lives on. The value will continue to appreciate.

Dedicated to both artists and art enthusiasts alike, Erotic Signature has put together a top-notch panel of judges consisting of such leading authorities publishers, museum curators, academics, collectors, editors, and established masters in the field of erotic art to narrow down all submitted entries to a mere 200 winners. Submissions will be accepted under the umbrella of fine art, digital art, photography and sculpture.

The winners will be featured in its first-annual bound coffee table book entitled The World’s Greatest Erotic Art of Today. The organizations up for consideration of this cash gift are: The Elton John AIDS Foundation, AMFAR, International Aids Society, and the Aids Healthcare Foundation.

Of the 200 winners, six (6) cash prizes including one (1) $10,000 master winner, four (4) category winners of $1000 each, and one (1) "Viewer's Choice" winner of $1000 will be awarded their accolades in December 2006 at a special ceremony aimed at celebrating the artists and raising additional charitable funds for the chosen AIDS organization. Each of six (6) winners will be given the opportunity to attend the ceremony via an all-expense paid trip to the ceremony location of Las Vegas, Nevada (USA). Following the ceremony will be a two (2) month long traveling exhibition in the United States, Europe, and Asia; offering the winning artists another opportunity to share their work around the world.

Would like to sell them very soon but need to get a general sense their worth. If you or someone you know can give me a casual appraisal, even over the phone, that would be terrific. I would be able to offer compensation upon selling either peice

Hi everyone,

I guess this stems from Oleg's artist of the month thread..I'd like to have everyone put in their favorite artist of the day (with website if possible) on this tribe so we can learn about them....
I guess I'll start: I like posters myself and there have been some good poster artists - one is: Ludwig Hohlwein you can see his clean work at http://www.internationalposter.com/adetail.cfm?ArtistNumber=375

thanks,

hi folks...have my site up where you can check the galleries and rate my works on a scale of 1-5. I can look at my stats and see how many times each painting is looked at but nobody has voted so it leaves room for lots of interpretation. If anyone wants to go see http://vcasey.com and rate my works i would really appreciate it. Thank you and happy holidays filled with love and peace...vCasey :-)

Need an appraisal on ancient chineese painting

Can anyone tell me how to get an appraisal on an ancient chinese painting? It was a gift to my father-in-law in the 60's from the son of a chinese general, and he was told not to sell it till after the end of the century. My father in law can't remember what dynasty it's supposed to be from, Han or Yan, something like that, but it's an early 4-dicipline style. Any ideas?

I'm a busy broker, art lover, and like great art. If anyone happens to be looking for a home, I arrange 100% financing with the closing costs rolled in (read: $0 out of pocket to move in) for almost anyone.

I'm looking for decorative type work, more art for galleries than art for museums. Love klee, klimt, kandinsky, rodin, expressive work. earthy colors.

LA Artist: lastname Rose (?) - figurative work @ Bergamot

I saw an artist at Bergamot station maybe 8 months ago. I think the last name was Rose. I think it was the Robert Berman gallery, but I'm not sure - he had a horseracing themed painting, and another with a zebra and satellite dishes. Conservative colors, figurative work.

ring a bell? anyone know who that is? I'd love to find him online.

How About Some Portfolio Diversity

Diversify your portfolio! Wanna have your own personal "Terrapin Station" GRATEFUL DEAD museum in your house or business? I have six absolutely unique pieces painted by Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelly and Rick Griffin that I would like to sell. No one else has these, they could only have copies or reproductions! You could own: Tiger Rose, Cats Under the Stars, Egypt, Dylan and the Dead (Front & Back cover art), and Without a Net. Three of these are in the book, Art of Rock.
These were all bought by me from the artists themselves. I would prefer to see one owner continue to possess these icons. Of course they are valuable and therefore expensive. We are talking at least a quarter million for them all or 50K each. 100K for the Dylan and the Dead art by Rick even though they are painted on plastic. If you are a serious collector or know a potential buyer please contact me. See rough "snapshots" of these works among the photos on my tribe.net "home page". Check em out!

Damon Soule (D23) who will also be showing some new works
alongside Matt Furie and myself.

FRIDAY JUNE 17
Artist Reception and Opening Party
Creature Heroes
Recent work by Damon Soule, Matt Furie and NoMe
9pm - until

Mark your calendars now for the much anticipated art opening for "Creature Heroes" featuring new work by Damon Soule, Matt Furie and Nome. Celebrated San Francisco painter Damon Soule is one of the leading artists to emerge from the Bay Area's vibrant graffiti art scene. His mixed media works center around an imaginary comic universe with a widely-recognized cast of hybridized man/machine characters, each of whom continue to evolve, age and morph after nearly a decade. With exploding robots, cartoonlike animals, design riffs and urban automata, Soule's works capture the raw energy of urban life with invigorating style. This will be the artist's first exhibition since moving to New York nearly two years ago.

In addition, the show features new work by NoMe, who's formalist blob-like paintings explore the lyrical potential of graffiti and word-drawings. By abandoning the decipherable qualities or "hidden truth" of the graffiti text and focusing on the inter play of rhythmic form and pure color, the artist frees graffiti from language altogether making a kind of "sculptural creature" which owes as much to blob-design as to the discourse of urban art and graffiti writing.

Finally, local emerging artist Matt Furie makes very small and intricate drawings of his imaginary aliens, monsters, and oddly beautiful mise en sc?nes. In like manner, his cast of creatures extend beyond their often normalized settings, conjuring up familiar science fiction narratives and kitschy futuristic diasporas

9:00pm - until
Free
Preview the show during gallery hours starting June 10th every Thur-Sat 2pm-6pm

First of all I would like to thank everyone for making me feel welcome here...I would love some feeback from you nice people type creatures. This sounds pathetic, but - Do you know anyone who would be interested in my stuffs? (that sounds bad...) I am trying to sell my creations to help fund a trip(s) to the doctor for my foot...I can't do my normal stagehand gigs because the foot is always angry and bulbous...yay... Any tips on how to get my name out there would be appreciated! I have created 3 pages for myself and have people posting my links on their sites...but I have had limited success. sigh...I remain happy, just frustrated. No insurance right now...it was too expensive. So, yeah...any help or advice would be well received...If you ever visit Norfolk, VA I will buy you a beverage of your choice.....Thanks!

Finder's Fees? (cross-post)

Hi there,

A question to those more in-the-know than I:

What is the (or is there a) standard percentage or rate for a finder's fee, if a rep/agent refers a client to you? & is that influenced at all by gallery commissions?

Hypothetical situation:
Artist has a show at a gallery. Artist's Rep (not affiliated with the gallery) refers a Client, who then purchases artwork from the gallery at $1000. Gallery commission is 50% of sale, leaving the Artist with $500. What amount should the Artist then give the Rep as a finder's fee for sending forth the Client?

Do galleries ever negotiate directly with reps on this sort of matter?

Thanks in advance!
Mari

This tribe seems to be about investing in art...I am an artist who would like someone to invest in my work! (smile) I am a starving artist, stagehand, and musician. I joined this tribe to see other interesting art work and to meet intelligent (but sarcastically demented) people type creatures.

It was of a horse racing scene, coming straight at the viewer. I'd love to find this artist.

The Prairie Wind Animal Refuge is a federal and state 501©3
Non-profit organization… Michael Jurich the owner of the refuge has been rescuing exotic and endangered species for over fifteen years. Siberian Tigers, Black Bears, Wolf/hybrids, Jaguar, Mountain Lions/esses, African Lions, Bobats, Lynx’ Coyote, Fox, Coming from situations such as travelling zoos, fur farms, imitation safaris, or in Yuma the mountain lioness’ case a college dorm room in Kansas. Michael’s sole intention is to offer space at his 50 acre ranch for these animals to live out their life in peace. The past five years for Michael have been particularly difficult. Being featured on Animal Planet, public awareness/interaction of the refuge was keeping the facility in great shape.. Volunteers, artists, photographers, and filmmakers had a great resource for creative and educational purposes. It was an incident a few years back that generated national attention in an unfortunate way. And the media was there of course to exaggerate the situation. A volunteer of six years was working with a Bengal tiger, Boris who she was not particularly used to working with. She triggered something in the wild animal and his instincts compelled him to bite her arm off. She survived and still supports the refuge in full, and volunteers on occasion. The USDA did an investigation on the refuge, and dredged up some petty “faults”(for example a tiny hole in the window of the shed where the food is kept was turned into food contamination, I work at the refuge and know how great it is run and how Michaels cares for these animal’s) which ended up with Michael forfeiting his exhibit liscence , and was put on a probationary period of two years. The probationary period is over. The media exploiting the tiger incident as well as these petty “faults” has created various difficult situation. Such as fines exceeding 20,000 dollars, and banning the usage of cameras and media. To top it off ten months ago the refuge lost a major contributor, a meat company in Denver that got bought out by a larger company. Leaving Prairie Wind in the dust with a 3-400 dollar a day food bill… Michael does this pretty much on his own with help from a couple of fundraisers. So up until my finding out about the refuge, web site, grant writing, or other means of creating sustainability or public awareness, has been put very far aside… I truly feel the integrity behind the Michael’s intentions and selfless actions will allow him to (hopefully sooner than later) be able to kick back and look at the beauty of what he has done. Opposed to his current mind state of it being a pain in the butt. Which I am sure it feels that way to him, but I feel fully inspired to help bring a new perspective to his world, as well as the public’s perspective of Prairie Wind and what it is really about.
My wish for the Refuge is that I can find someone, or multiple someones who see the beauty of this, and are willing to help financially sustain food costs, which exceed 300 dollars a day… Also it sits on 50 acres at the current time.. And I would love to obtain the resources to set up a comm.(unity) project to expand on the 450 acres that surround it.. Creating natural habitat enclosures, and really just creating an even more beautiful of a scene for the animals.. The enclosures are around $800.. Which the animals can be paired up in… There are two already for two Tigers, and the two extinct Barbari Lions, the rest of the animals are in nice situations but not as nice as it could be.. But first things first the animals need food. And there is little that they can do to feed themselves... There are no government grants for private sanctuaries. You must be affiliated with some “institutionalisation” in order to be a bit eligible. Even then it is difficult to get through the loopholes… Walking door to door I feel is just not the most efficient way for the funds to be raised.. Often time people won’t allow the time for me to explain what the situation really is.. I am doing what I can with the time that I have to obtain as many avenues of financial sustainability as possible, As well as co-creating a nice website, but the process is slow. Not too many people are willing to devote much time because there is little pay back… So I have created this letter with the sole intention of sharing my perspective, and hopefully inspiring someone to offer assistance.. Thank you so much for your time and open heart..

If you look up Prairie Wind on google you will find good information, but some of the sites were created un-efficiently.

Please share this with friends..

Interesting..

hI everyone,

I'm new to this group and I am intrigued. I'm from Montreal Canada, and I love art. I have been looking around for ways to involve making money in the art world and this seems interesting. Could someone explain to me how one makes a business out of investing in art? Do corporations lease paintings? Buy and hold or sell? Being a broker?

thanks for clearing this up for me,

Alok

Selling Haitian art

I have a connection in the Dominican Republic for selling all the Haitian art I can warehouse. I am planning to create a web site to sell this stuff online.

Anyone have any advice? What target markets do you propose, and why? Do you know of anyone available for building the an art-related site (I develop, but would prefer to handle the international marketing, which is what I specialize in) complete with PayPal (or better) shopping cart? I have developers available but would prefer to shop for the right

I am also thinking of adding Huichol Mexican art to the site if I can manage a connection down in Mexico for doing this. Again -- target markets?

What about eBay? I tried selling some Huichol art off and on over the last year with very limited successes. Is eBay good for selling foreign artwork, at all? If so, who buys it on eBay?

Thanks!
